Moses goes to Ramses, sees him mourning for his son, and Ramses finally gives the Hebrews their freedom: “You and your people have my permission to go. Okay, this is also a sad song (very melancholic, focused on cellos), but it’s when we see that Ramses’ son was killed by the 10th plague (death of the first born). Like “Rally,” not much that’s super remarkable about this song. This song plays when Moses first returns and tries to convince Ramses (now the Pharaoh) to let his people go. As a Genius commentator writes (gotta love commentary on instrumental tracks), “The track is very solemn to begin with as Seti reprimands his sons, but gradually lightens in tone and becomes playful as Moses speaks with his brother.” PERSONALLY, don’t love the solemn tracks.

This bit of score is from when Ramses and Moses are racing in a chariot and they end up damaging a newly constructed temple. (Obviously, this is super off: Why add it into the plot?)

Zipporah then escapes, and Moses follows her - this song plays in the background. This song is kind of short, hence why it’s so low on the list, and because the Prince of Egypt gives her kind of a weird plot: The high priests Hotep and Huy give Zipporah to Ramseses as a gift after he is named Prince Regent. She’s the wife of Moses, and one of seven daughters of Reuel, also called Jethro (the Priest of Midian). Zipporah (Tzipporah) is one of the female characters of the Bible you rarely hear about. Not even sure when it happens in the movie. Kinda forgot about this one - doesn’t really stand out. Since we believe in the motto “go big or go home,” we have decided to rank all 19 for you.

By all means, see it with the children in your life-and be prepared to discuss it with them afterward. In celebration of the film’s 20th anniversary, and ahead of Passover, we’re going to do what we do best at Alma: rank all the songs.Ī note on methodology: There are eight musical numbers in the movie and 19 tracks on the soundtrack. (After all, the Israelites wander in the wilderness for forty years after that, and Moses ultimately is not allowed to enter the Promised Land-perhaps not the uplifting ending the filmmakers had in mind.) Some of the subject matter is dark and disturbing, and there is no shying away from the harsh realities of the original texts. The storytellers wisely chose to end their tale at the climactic crossing of the Red Sea even the delivery of the Ten Commandments is portrayed only in an epilogue vignette. The voice work is especially good-Val Kilmer is fine as Moses, and Pharoah, voiced by Ralph Fiennes, positively seethes with arrogance and hubris.

One truly astonishing, harrowing sequence recounts the slaughter of firstborn Hebrew children by bringing hieroglyphic drawings to life on the walls of an Egyptian temple. The action sequences are truly exciting, overall pacing is excellent, and the miracles wrought by God are depicted with awed and respectful wonder. The Biblical story told in the books of Genesis and Exodus is followed very faithfully, with only minor changes made for dramatic reasons. (I do wonder, though, if three soundtrack albums-the film's soundtrack, an "inspirational" album, and a "country" album-were really necessary.) The animation team has accomplished something truly spectacular watching "The Prince of Egypt" is like seeing life breathed into a rich, luxurious tapestry. As with "Antz," released earlier this year, DreamWorks has successfully resisted the temptation to populate this film with characters that can be turned into further revenue through toy sales. With "The Prince of Egypt," DreamWorks makes good on its promise to deliver a state-of-the-art animated film that will compete favorably with the best Disney has to offer. But the truth will ultimately set them at odds, as one becomes the ruler of the most powerful empire on Earth, and the other the chosen leader of his people. Growing up the best of friends, they share a strong bond of free-spirited youth and good-natured rivalry. This is the extraordinary tale of two brothers named Ramses II and Moses, one born of royal blood, and one an orphan with a secret past.
